Nasca, Paracas & Ballestas Islands

Crap, I'd just typed this all out on my little iPod in an email so j could copy it into my blog when I next have wifi, but I just deleted it instead of saving it - arse!

So here I go again... Nasca...

Nasca was literally a flying visit (no punintended) I got into the bus terminal at about 6.30am and was gone again by 11.30am.

I got to the airport for 8.00 and we watched a DVD on the discovery and history of the nasca lines. Quite interesting and made you think, for example, why did the nascas make a monkey shape when he's from the rainforest and they live in the desert, and why did they want these images to be visable from the sky when No-one could fly...? Unfortunately the airport was really noisy and it was hard to hear all the programme, but it was interesting what I heard of it.

The flight itself was about half an hour in a tiny little aeroplane. I got to sit in the co-pilot seat which was fun! We saw the lines, they were smaller than I was expecting!

Then I had to sort out my bus to Paracas and managed to get on one really quickly. I got to Paracas in the afternoon and sorted my tours out for the next day to the ballestas islands and Paracas national reserve.

Othet than doing that, there wasn't much to do there. I went for a walk to explore and got stared at by the locals - odd. But I had a really lovely tea of freshly caught fish - it was beautiful!

The next day I found myself queueing with all the rest of the gringos to get on a boat ti go and see the islands. I hate being so blatantly touristy but it was the only way to see them.

The islands are also known as the 'poor mans galapagos'... There were lots of birds and sealions to see. The islands are about 30 mins boat ride out of Paracas. We had some pellicans flying alongside our boat for some of the ride which was ace! They're such pre-historic looking birds!

Anyway we got ti the islands which are just big rocks and were met by the very unpleasant stench of lots and lots and lots of bird shit. It really honked! But there were loads of birds ti see - thousands of them! We saw lots of different species: cormorants, turns, gulls, turkey vultures, pellicans and boobies *snigger* (although I didn't actually get to see what they looked like - didn't see where the guide was pointing to)

We saw loads of sealions as well. They looked so squashed on the tiny little beaches - no wonder they were si vocal and moaning so much!

Later that morning we went out to the national reserve. It was a good visit although we didn't do as much as I was expecting. We went to a couple of viewpoints including this rock formation known as the 'Cathedral'. The thing was, the rock formation collapsed on 2007 due to an earthquake so there's not much there! Not sure why they're still taking people there...

I saw loads more pellicans which was cool. They were flying everywhere! We went to a little fishing village for lunch (I had some more yummy sole) and to sit on the beach for a bit. The pellicans were just like seagulls chasing the fishing boats! It was funny to see. One young pellican was sat in the street, it was cool to be able to see one so close. I got a picture of him and then he came to see me when I was sat outside the restaurant having my lunch too! I think he had a bit of a damaged wing as he wasn't flying but otherwise he seemed happy enough!

Then it was back to paracas. Then I had to get a bus for Lima and change buses to get the night bus to Huaraz.
